Visa Acquires Featurespace in £700M Deal

Visa has completed its acquisition of Featurespace, a developer of real-time AI payments protection technology. The acquired company's capabilities will be integrated into Visa's range of fraud prevention and risk-scoring offerings, combining both companies' products and tools to enhance fraud protection services.

Antony Cahill, President, Value-Added Services at Visa shared the vision: "We are thrilled to welcome Featurespace to Visa. Both our companies have been at the forefront of using AI to solve longstanding challenges and pain points in the payments industry." Featurespace's founder, Dave Excell added: "We developed our innovations to help crack even the most complex fraud cases. As part of Visa, we will be able to set a new standard in AI-powered fraud prevention."

The Featurespace business will be incorporated into Visa's Risk and Identity Solutions business unit, with their product portfolio being integrated into Visa's existing offering over the coming months.

🇳🇿 NZ Commerce Commission cuts local companies' fees for Visa, Mastercard payments. The proposal intends to reduce New Zealand businesses' payment fees by NZ$260 million annually. The decision is part of the Commission's broader effort to reduce payment costs for both businesses and consumers.

🇨🇳 UnionPay simplifies payments for visitors to mainland China. UnionPay International has partnered with Weixin Pay to enable UnionPay wallet users to scan Weixin Pay codes in mainland China. Users will be allowed to link UnionPay cards to wallets and pay via Weixin Pay codes in mainland China, with automatic currency conversion to RMB.

🇺🇸 A running list of BaaS banks hit with consent orders in 2024. Federal regulators, including the OCC, FDIC, and Federal Reserve, are intensifying enforcement against banks partnering with FinTechs, particularly for Bank Secrecy Act violations. Regulators emphasize the neeed for robust commercial agreements, ongoing oversight, and effective risk management frameworks.

🇬🇧 FCA apologises to Collateral investors. Collateral, a peer-to-peer investment firm, fraudulently altered its FCA register details to appear authorised for consumer credit activities. The FCA failed to detect or act promptly on the issue, leading to investor losses. 


DIGITAL BANKING NEWS

🇵🇭 GoTyme aims 9 Million customers by 2025. This growth will be fuelled by a range of new product launches and services aimed at enhancing the customer experience and broadening financial inclusion in the Philippines. Central to this strategy is the introduction of a “Buy Now, Pay Later” scheme.

Losses from crypto hacks jump to $2.2 bln in 2024. Funds stolen through cryptocurrency platform hacks surged 21% in 2024, according to Chainalysis. Most stolen funds stemmed from private key compromises, with centralized platforms being the primary targets.

🇸🇻 El Salvador's bitcoin wallet may be sold or discontinued after a $1.4 billion loan IMF agreement, which requires scaling back Bitcoin policies. Bitcoin remains legal tender, and the government will continue to buy it, potentially accelerating purchases for reserves.

🇸🇬 Funding Societies raises $25M. SMEs contribute nearly 50% of Southeast Asia’s GDP but face challenges accessing affordable capital. The FinTech has loaned over $4B to 100,000+ businesses and recently raised $25M from Cool Japan Fund, its first Southeast Asia FinTech investment.
