Tap to Pay on iPhone Expands Its Global Footprint

Hey FinTech Fanatic!
Nearly three years after its debut in the U.S., Apple’s Tap to Pay on iPhone is now available in nine more European countries.
Merchants in Bulgaria, Finland, Hungary, Liechtenstein, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Switzerland can accept contactless payments using just an iPhone—no extra hardware required. With this expansion, Tap to Pay is now available in 18 countries.
First launched in the U.S. in February 2022, Tap to Pay allows businesses to accept Apple Pay, contactless credit and debit cards, and other digital wallets using only an iPhone and a compatible iOS app. The service expanded to the UK and France in 2023, followed by Japan and five EU countries in 2024.
The latest expansion brings the technology to millions of additional businesses, from small vendors to large retailers. With Tap to Pay, transactions are processed securely via NFC, and Apple does not store purchase details or customer information. The feature is compatible with iPhone Xs or later models running the latest iOS version.
“As more and more consumers are tapping to pay with digital wallets and credit cards,” said Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s VP of Apple Pay & Apple Wallet, at the service’s U.S. launch in 2022, “Tap to Pay on iPhone will provide businesses with a secure, private, and easy way to accept contactless payments and unlock new checkout experiences using the power, security, and convenience of iPhone.”
