Tap to Pay on iPhone Expands Its Global Footprint
Tap to Pay on iPhone expands, enabling global mobile payments

Hey FinTech Fanatic!

Nearly three years after its U.S. debut, Apple’s Tap to Pay on iPhone is expanding across Europe, now available in nine more countries.

Merchants in Bulgaria, Finland, Hungary, Liechtenstein, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Switzerland can now accept contactless payments using just an iPhone—no additional hardware needed. This move strengthens the fintech industry by making secure payments more accessible to businesses of all sizes.

Since its launch in 2022, Tap to Pay has enabled businesses to accept mobile payments via Apple Pay, digital wallets, and contactless banking cards, supporting the shift towards alternative banking solutions. The service expanded to the UK and France in 2023, followed by Japan and five EU countries in 2024.

With this latest expansion, millions of businesses—from fintech startups to major retailers—can now tap into payments innovation with Apple’s NFC-powered technology. Every transaction is processed with secure payments in mind, while Apple upholds banking innovation by safeguarding customer data. The feature is compatible with iPhone Xs and newer models running the latest iOS.

“As more and more consumers are tapping to pay with digital wallets and credit cards,” said Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s VP of Apple Pay & Apple Wallet, at the service’s U.S. launch in 2022, “Tap to Pay on iPhone will provide businesses with a secure, private, and easy way to accept contactless payments and unlock new checkout experiences using the power, security, and convenience of iPhone.”
